Description
Unique "Tinker" chair, 1988 Painted and hammered steel. Handmade by Ron Arad at One Off Ltd., London. From an edition of 5. 35 in. (89 cm) high Provenance Century Hotel, Miami Beach, USA Literature Deyan Sudic, Ron Arad Restless Furniture, New York, 1989, p. 102; Matthew Collings, Ron Arad Talks to Matthew Collings, London, 2004, p. 124 Ron Arad belongs to a generation of self-taught designers to whom design means more than mere pragmatism. His work treads the line between art and design. Over the span of his career, Arad has learned to exploit a number of different materials including extruded plastic, tempered steel, blown aluminum and most recently, Corian. His virtuosity with a variety of materials enables him to more fluently express his ideas.

Notes
The "Tinker" chair is representative of his neo-Baroque reaction to the industrial climate of 1980s design. This piece was formed by hand, its uneven surface carefully considered although it may look haphazard. The "Tinker" chair embodies the atmosphere and attitude of many young Londoners in the late-1980s; post-punk rebellion set against the backdrop of urban decay. His materials and processes speak directly to the political climate of the moment and truly make the "Tinker" chair a design that is representative of its time. The present lot was used along with two "Big Easy" chairs in the lobby of the Century Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
